The Pros of Home Workouts – Home vs Gym Workouts (Part 2)
These are the 15 primary advantages of home workouts. It is guaranteed that you can find more:
1. Your home is open 24/7
Even if you don’t have a 24/7 fitness club near you, at home you can choose a convenient time to exercise around your lifestyle and daily schedule.
2. Less commuting
No commuting to and from the gym, no traffic jams, no fuel costs and it is eco-friendly for the environmentally conscious.
3. Privacy – a big advantage for many people
For beginners, introverts, people who are not physically fit and in general those who don’t feel confident for their own reasons, the gym can be an intimidating experience: club members who are stronger, fitter, super confident, wearing trendy activewear and showing off their sculpted bodies (sometimes also offering unsolicited advice).
People who need privacy, they might avoid starting a fitness program altogether or they will simply quit very soon. Starting a fitness program at home can help them build confidence while learning the basics. There is always the opportunity to join a gym later.
4. A better choice for women
Many women would prefer to exercise at a ladies gym but it is not always easy to find. In unisex gyms that are dominated by men, women often choose to do only classes because they don’t feel comfortable in the weights lounge being surrounded by so many men.
5. You can still workout on a Monday
Gyms aren’t closed on Mondays, but if you go to the gym on a Monday you will probably have an unproductive workout. It is the busiest day in any gym with everything that comes with it: more sweat, more funny smells, more wasted time.
6. No distractions
Sometimes gyms play loud music that you don’t enjoy. Or people would like a chat but all you want is to get done with your workout quickly and leave.
7. You are the DJ
You play the music that you love and inspires you, as loud as you want it.
8. Time efficiency
Home workouts save you loads of time. No waiting to use equipment, no wasted time looking for the missing dumbbells, no commuting, no wasted time changing clothes if you workout after work, no gym bag to prepare for the next day.
9. Cost efficiency
You can set up an inexpensive home gym in no time and your equipment is yours forever. Some planning can help of course, to choose the right equipment for your needs and goals.
No gym membership. How many people buy a gym membership that they don’t use and they forget completely that this periodic payment is leaving their bank account? You know, when people join the gym in early January and they quit after a couple of weeks. Or they don’t step foot in the gym at all.
10. Better hygiene
Your home meets your own hygiene standards. You don’t have to wipe other people’s sweat from the equipment and you don’t have to endure other people’s funny smells. You finish your workout and you jump in your shower which meets your own hygiene standards.
11. Ideal temperatures
At home you can set the ideal room temperature to exercise. No freezing temperatures in the winter, and no melt down in the summer. There are still gyms with no air condition in many parts of the world – mostly to save money, or with broken air condition systems and not ideal temperatures in general.
12. Post workout meals on time
You can have your post workout meal on time to support recovery. You don’t have to starve until you get back home and you don’t have to carry in your gym bag shakers, Tupperware, food, etc.
13. Different and more challenging workouts
At home you will be improvising a lot to increase the intensity of your workout, and to keep it interesting and challenging. You will be using different exercises, different techniques, different training methods. This means that you will become better conditioned and more fit overall. The gym can make us a bit lazy with all the strength and cardio machines.
14. You can still have a personal trainer
You can choose to have an online fitness coach, without being limited to a specific gym’s available personal trainers. By the way, this is what I do, I am an online fitness coach.
15. No nomadic gym life
What is nomadic gym life? If you have been going to the gym for a few decades, you have probably changed many fitness clubs in your lifetime. Maybe there is no other gym in your area to try. At this point you feel like it is time to stop being a gym nomad and ‘settle down’ in your own home gym.
I hope you have found many good reasons in the list, to consider starting a fitness program at home. Home workouts also come with disadvantages and in the next blog we will list the disadvantages of home workouts.
